Tuna and Tomato Pasta / Pasta Al Tonno

Tuna and Tomato Pasta / Pasta Al Tonno

And you thought getting canned was a bad thing?

A tuna based seafood pasta that doesn’t require anything fancy. Just a can of tuna, tomatoes, and some spices. Before we get started, a few tips on selecting the tuna.

Water or Oil?

In terms of flavor, look for tuna that is preserved in olive oil versus water. It’s not the end of the world one way or the other, but the flavor of the olive oil will give you a head start.

Choice of Tuna

The recipe below uses albacore tuna. While any tuna will do, albacore tends to be a bit mild, complimenting the sauce, versus overpowering it in a way other tuna might.

Note that this recipe uses canned tuna, which is precooked

What you’ll need

Serves 2 portions

  • Olive oil

  • 1 can of Albacore tuna, preserved in oil or water (Typically 120-140 grams)

  • 180 grams of tomatoes, chopped (3 roma tomatoes, or 8-12 cherry tomatoes)

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp Calabrian Chili Paste, or hot chili paste (note: sub 1 tsp red pepper flakes if needed)

  • Seasonings: Salt, Pepper, Oregano, fresh basil leaves

  • 2 servings of pasta (orecchiette or ziti work well)

Lets Do This

  1. On medium-low heat, add olive oil to cover the bottom of a pan. Open the can of tuna and drain excess liquid out

  2. Chop tomatoes into smaller portions and set aside

  3. Add garlic to the pan and cook until slightly golden, 2-5 minutes

  4. Add the tomatoes and chili paste and stir to combine. Add seasonings and bring to medium heat and cook until tomatoes have wilted down to form a sauce. Reduce heat back to medium-low

  5. Meanwhile, boil pasta water and cook pasta as package instructs

  6. As the pasta cooks, add tuna to the sauce and break apart into small pieces

  7. Drain pasta, reserving 1/4 cup of pasta water and add pasta to the sauce. Toss to coat, adding a drizzle of olive oil and reserved water as needed to form a silky sauce

  8. Cook pasta in sauce for an additional minute

  9. Plate, garnish with any extra basil, and serve immediately
